This past weekend was one of profound reflection and bittersweet emotions. It was a time to honor the lives of those who have passed and to cherish the memories they left behind. I found myself traveling between Bakersfield, Petaluma, and Fremont, paying respects to friends and loved ones who had touched my life in ways I’ll always carry with me. Each stop reminded me of the beauty of connection, the fleeting nature of time, and the power of love and community.
In Petaluma, I attended a ceremony for Al, a man whose spirit was as vibrant and magical as the Burning Man culture he introduced me to. As I stood among familiar faces and strangers who came from all corners of his life—places where he grew up, worked, and found joy—I was struck by the sheer impact one person can have. Al’s smile had this way of lighting up a room, and even in his absence, his magic lingered. It was heartwarming to hear the stories people shared about him, each one painting a picture of a man who truly lived.
Al was the one who encouraged me to experience Burning Man, a transformative journey that opened my eyes to new ways of seeing the world. His influence stays with me, and while it’s hard to believe he’s truly gone, I know his “caw prints” will forever remain in my heart.
In Fremont, I rushed to visit a dear friend after hearing she had entered hospice care. My heart raced as I made my way to her bedside, knowing this might be our final meeting. Seeing her there, frail and unresponsive, yet surrounded by love and community, was both heartbreaking and humbling. She had suffered a stroke, leaving half of her body paralyzed, and the morphine keeping her comfortable signaled that her time was drawing near.
I sat with her, holding onto memories of our conversations over the years. She was an extraordinary interpreter, a bridge between worlds, and a fierce advocate for community. Seeing so many Deaf friends and interpreters stopping by to visit her spoke volumes about how deeply she was loved. In that room, filled with quiet conversations and shared tears, I realized the legacy she leaves behind—one of connection, service, and unwavering kindness.
Finally, in Bakersfield, I attended a ceremony for the mother of a close friend. She was a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to strength, love, and family. As I watched her relatives and friends gather to celebrate her life, I saw the threads of connection she had woven throughout her community. It was beautiful to observe how deeply she was cherished—not only by her family but by everyone whose lives she touched.
This weekend left me with a profound sense of gratitude—not only for the lives of these extraordinary people but also for the moments I shared with them. Each person left an indelible mark on me. Whether it was Al’s infectious smile and adventurous spirit, my friend’s dedication to her craft and community, or the quiet strength of a mother who loved deeply, their legacies remind me of the importance of living fully and loving fiercely.
It’s never easy to say goodbye, and the ache of loss lingers long after the ceremonies are over. But as I traveled between these places, I realized that the connections we build in this life—no matter how brief or enduring—are what make us eternal in the hearts of others. I am grateful to have been a part of their lives, and I will carry their stories and their love with me, always.
