Today was a day of reflection, connection, and growth.
This afternoon, I found myself debating whether to attend the BYTOC meeting at the Deaf school or stay at a friend’s ceremony. It was a tough choice, but I remembered the promise I had made to another friend to be at the BYTOC meeting, so I kept my word—and I’m so glad I did.
The meeting turned out to be incredibly enriching. I met new people, including interpreters and members of the Deaf community, and reconnected with some familiar faces. What struck me most was the depth of the discussions we had. Topics like intersectionality, identity, and the unique needs of people of color resonated deeply. Conversations about tokenism led to valuable insights—one that stood out to me was the importance of creating a two-way street in relationships, grounded in giving and receiving.
One perspective that really made me think was how we, as people of color, can approach situations with clarity and openness—seeking to understand what others need from us and offering the same in return. This mutuality can prevent misunderstandings, trauma, or grudges, and instead, build bridges of empathy and collaboration. Reflecting on this, I realized how important it is to consider our shared humanity while balancing our contributions of time, energy, and emotional labor.
After the meeting, I was invited to join a small group of friends for dinner at a nearby sushi restaurant. That dinner was exactly what I needed. In the warmth of familiar company, I found myself starting to reconnect with a part of me that I had lost over the past year—especially after navigating the complexities of separation from my wife. Sitting there, laughing and enjoying heartfelt conversations, I felt a glimmer of healing. It was as though I was rediscovering how to enjoy life again, like pressing “reset” and starting over.
One friend mentioned that 2025 is the “Year of Mental Health,” and I couldn’t agree more. So many of us have faced challenges and struggles throughout 2024, but I believe this year has also been a time of self-discovery and learning. As we step into 2025, I feel hopeful that we’re entering a phase of collective healing.
I’m grateful for today’s experiences—for the connections, the wisdom, and the reminder that even amidst transition, there is always room for growth, reflection, and joy. Here’s to healing, new beginnings, and building bridges for a brighter future.
